| Said ibn Jubayr and Ibn Abza said: ﾓThis verse was revealed about Abu Sufyan ibn Harb who had hired, on the day of Uhud, two thousand Abyssinian men to fight against the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, without counting those Arabs who answered his call to fight with him | All these men were from Quraysh and each one of them gave ten containers of food dailyﾔ |

There were three thousand of them whereas we were a group of nobles: three hundred of us or four hundred at most.

| Sesungguhya orang-orang yang mengingkari ayat-ayat dan menyekutukan Allah itu membelanjakan harta dan kekayaan mereka untuk merintangi manusia agar tidak percaya pada kebenaran dan mereka bersikeras melakukan hal itu | Melayu - Basmeih : Sesungguhnya orangorang kafir yang selalu membelanjakan harta mereka untuk menghalangi manusia dari jalan Allah maka mereka tetap membelanjakannya kemudian harta yang dibelanjakan itu menyebabkan penyesalan kepada mereka tambahan pula mereka dikalahkan Dan ingatlah orangorang kafir itu akhirnya dihimpunkan dalam neraka jahanam• Mereka akan menafkahkan harta itu kemudian hal itu pada akhirnya menjadi sesalan bagi mereka sendiri mereka akan merasa menyesal karena harta mereka terbuang secara percuma dan tujuan mereka tidak berhasil kemudian mereka dikalahkan di dunia |
Said Muqatil and al-Kalbi: ﾓThis was revealed, on the Day of Badr, about those who customarily fed the pilgrims in the season of Hajj.
